ABSTRACT

The chapter provides an explanation of the rhetorical functions of direct quotation in academic writing as well as notes on teaching. The functions outlined by the authors are based on whether quotation is used to merely present words from a source text, or whether quotation has been utilized by the writer to support an original idea. The teaching notes discuss the concepts of cohesion, plagiarism, and function as they relate to academic writing instruction, especially L2 undergraduate writing. The chapter is in three sections: literature in the field, rhetorical function, and notes on teaching. The literature in the field outlines the four major studies in direct quotation analysis published this century, as well as studies on methodology.
