ABSTRACT

This book is a time capsule of the state of media education around the world between 2020 and 2021 following the increased instances of COVID-19 cases leading to national lockdowns, remote instruction, and political unrest and social and economic disruption in many countries. In this introductory chapter, we offer a model of the media education ecosystem based on previous models to emphasize the relationships and impact of each part of the process. Each chapter of this handbook represents how media educators addressed the many challenges facing the consequences of the global pandemic. Each unique culture, context, and setting dealt with the situation in ways that were both similar and different in their nuances. The authors of the 57 chapters of this book offer a multiplicity of approaches to overcome these old and new challenges as we move toward new horizons in the future of media education.
