ABSTRACT

The pandemic disrupted life, as we knew it, especially work and education. Institutions have been dealing with the problems of moving online and this is all the more challenging when an institution prides itself on a learn-as-you-do method in journalism. The harsh lockdown demanded that people stay indoors and move out only when necessary—a big hurdle for practical work in a journalism school. Technology and people skills, mainly building trust, came to the rescue here. Adapting quickly to the situation, the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media managed not just to end one academic year well, but also successfully ran a new academic year—both online and on campus. It stuck resolutely to its philosophy of getting students to report stories and produce editions, finding ways to get around the challenges of remote learning. And, these challenges were many—both for faculty and for students.
