ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a pedagogical approach that I term ‘Meta-Media Studies’, which seeks to turn the critical lens we use in our teaching of Media Studies on a Higher Education postgraduate taught degree at the University of Sussex, UK, onto the classroom itself. In this chapter, I take one concern—that of surveillance culture—and demonstrate how I worked through this Media Studies topic with Master’s degree students through the examples of educational technologies (EdTech) via which their Media Studies programme was being taught.

This chapter emphasises why adopting a ‘Meta-Media Studies’ approach is a moral imperative for media teachers. We are complicit in surveillance cultures when we use EdTech, and thus, we have a responsibility to help our students make informed decisions about their participation with such platforms.
