ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has tremendously impacted how higher education (HE) institutions are currently shifting toward building more flexible, open, and adaptive learning environments. With advanced technological progress and the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) into education, the development of Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) is attracting the attention of researchers, educators, and practitioners across different disciplines and across the globe. This chapter provides an overview of PLE development from technological perspectives while not minimizing its pedagogical importance, specifically from the Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) perspective. Further, the chapter overviews what types of technological approaches have been proposed for building PLEs in HE. Then, the chapter provides an overview of what types of PLE assessments have been conducted. Finally, the chapter proposes the idea for the development of a technical assessment scale that can be used by HE institution leaders to promote flexible and collaborative learning environments.
