ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into the evolving landscape of personal learning environments (PLEs) in the context of social changes and emerging technologies that are reshaping higher education. It examines the social factors driving the development of PLEs, followed by a discussion on personal learning in the age of digital transformation of higher education. It further highlights the significance of PLEs and their role in supporting student-centered learning, and explores the emerging technologies that facilitate PLEs in contemporary higher education settings. Additional tools and platforms that support the PLE concept are also included. The chapter also emphasizes the role of PLEs as a culturally responsive teaching approach, promoting inclusivity and diversity in the learning process, hence providing educators, researchers, and policymakers with a deep understanding of the role and importance of PLEs in the rapidly changing higher education landscape.
