ABSTRACT

Multiple crises and criticalities of economic growth and developmentalism have been unleashed across the planetary boundaries. The entry contextualises this and locates India’s Northeast that is being reproduced as ‘growth engine’ and ‘resource hub’ with a fast-transforming geography, society, and ecology. It, therefore, brings out various conflictual features against developmentalism that has engulfed the region in the recent times, and raises a pertinent debate over the values of sustainability. It proposes a normative shift towards an alternative like de-growth to harmonize the living world with shared prosperity. It also proposes an institutional frame with an embedded channel of community participation and indigenous knowledge systems for sustainable economies, resource managements, and sharing to ensure developmental justice.
