ABSTRACT

This entry discusses the Assam–Bangladesh border, tracing its historical emergence, development, and politics from colonial times up till the present. Special attention is given to the districts of Sylhet, Cachar, and Goalpara, whose politics has been variously mired up with Bengal and its inhabitants, whether reciprocal or oppositional. The final part of this entry looks at the varied tensions that exist between local Assamese and Bangladeshi/Bengali immigrant settlers in Assam today.
