ABSTRACT

The entry looks at two aspects of migration, namely evolutionary and language contact, or in other words, causes and effects of migration, respectively, in the context of Northeast India. With regard to peopling, the region is shown to be the home of a typical eastern Neolithic population on the basis of archaeological and genetic evidences. In terms of the current linguistic situation in the region, the study discusses the importance of two states, Manipur and Nagaland, in making Northeast to be the linguistically most diverse region of India, and shows, additionally, how migration within the Northeast has been in one direction.
