ABSTRACT

In the Khasi context, the word khana or telling becomes a prefix for narrative, thereby informing the type and function of the telling that a particular genre of folklore is supposed to embody. Therefore, khanatang is myth, khanapateng is legend, khanabiria is joke, khanalorni is gossip and khanapuriskam is folktale. This entry deals with each of these genres with suitable examples from the erstwhile Khasi Hills district of Assam and present-day state of Meghalaya.
