ABSTRACT
Northeast India may be one of the last economic backwaters of India, but it is a mosaic of diverse cultures and ethnicities. It also is one of the least urbanized of the major cultural regions of India. The entry tries a synoptic view of the broad canvass of processes towards its integration of a primarily tribal past with modernity and economic processes into recent times.
