ABSTRACT

The rapid urbanisation of India’s Northeast frontier is one of the most crucial transformations the region has witnessed since Independence. In the Northeast Indian states, the percentage of the population living in urban areas is increasing rapidly while the land being classified as ‘urban’ is expanding – creating new opportunities for developers and capitalists from within the region and beyond. Existing urban areas are becoming more dense, more diverse, and more ‘developed’ through vertical housing, showpiece projects to put cities ‘on the map’, and infrastructure to support larger populations.
