ABSTRACT

This chapter explores techniques for creating ideas for innovation in schools. A key feature in this chapter is the idea of Getting Out of the Building, which is a popular slogan in entrepreneurial circles driven by the need to learn about people’s values and to create value for others through novel ideas. Some key techniques will be illustrated for generating novel ideas followed by a process for validating ideas. These processes are explained for teacher education contexts, forming the basis for teachers to gain immediate entrepreneurial experiences as the source for professional learning and professional engagement. Observations from Practice are then described, before introducing some Learning Activities to enable the application of theory-to-practice. Learning activities involve stepping teachers through a simple validation process by focusing on an innovation in their teaching practice. Activity topics include: What is the Problem? Who Owns the Problem? Why is it a Problem? and Get Out of the Building. Finally, key Principles for Idea Creation and Innovation are considered.

Keywords: creating, idea, learning, problem, validation, value.
