ABSTRACT

The data provided shows that European road cargo transport increased by 0.2% between 2017 and 2018. At the same time, cross-border and cabotage transport, which account for 11.5% of total transport performance, decreased by 4.5% in 2018 compared to the results obtained in 2017. The path to attaining the contemporary position of road transport began in the 21st century. It was back then that, along with the development of the crude oil refining method and the invention of combustion ignition “diesel” engine, the first motor vehicles were constructed, primarily used for passenger transport. The feature is the flexibility to adapt to specific conditions or expectations of the passenger or the customer. Because of these developments before the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, more than half of cargo and passenger transport in the European Union countries were transported using road transport.
