ABSTRACT
The rapid decline in insect diversity and abundance in different areas worldwide threatens ecosystem functioning and human well-being. Raising awareness about this alarming trend and increasing public literacy in insect conservation has become a top priority and a promising long-term solution for the conservation of biodiversity. In this chapter, we, a team of scientists and practitioners from four continents, discuss how we can train the future generation of insect conservationists and build a bridge between science and the public by highlighting the importance of education in insect conservation and presenting case studies that highlight different approaches to insect conservation outreach, including local community, schools, museums, zoos, gardens, social media, mobile apps, and games. We finally conclude with suggestions for future strategic directions and considerations to maximise the impact of insect education and outreach. We hope that this chapter will give guidance and inspire researchers, technicians, institutions, amateurs, funders, and policymakers to prioritise public outreach as a key element of insect conservation.
