ABSTRACT

This introduction to assessments for identification describes the purposes for identifying gifted and advanced learners for services and programs; models that meet the national standards criteria and specific questions for developing an identification process that examine student characteristics, different types of assessment tools and their technical adequacy, the identification process, programming, professional learning, collaboration, and effectiveness. Following this description, a brief overview of each chapter in this section is provided along with their relationship to the central questions. These relationships include understanding the characteristics of the populations of advanced learners, processes that are most likely to be effective in finding them, and promising assessment tools.
