ABSTRACT

Migrants from rural areas move to the cities with the hope to earn a living of their own. Majority of them become street vendors due to their low socio-economic backgrounds. This paper focuses on the living conditions of the mobile vendors, based on a recent study conducted among a sample of 150 train vendors in the city of Mumbai. The findings of the study indicate that they are the poorest of the poor in the city. A set of programmatic and policy initiatives are suggested in the paper to enhance the well-being of mobile vendors in urban India.
