ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the notion of organizational resilience through the lens of a systems approach. The aim is to consider resilience as a means of addressing the issues of uncertainty and threat by looking at how the management of risk (as measurable uncertainty) is a function of the organization's abilities to manage information and knowledge within a dynamic threat environment. The chapter begins by exploring the origins of the term “resilience” in terms of its academic genesis. It frames the construct within a systems approach, which is in keeping with much of the work on crisis management where there is a clear synergy between both theoretical frameworks.
