ABSTRACT

Chapter 10, by Wu, provides an account of growing up in “an average family” where the Wu dialect was spoken and Mandarin Chinese was learned only at school. Having his grandmother as a caregiver when he was very young, Wu recalls children’s nursery rhymes, reading classics in Chinese, reading and writing as influenced by examination, exposure to Western literature, and creative writing on the QQ, a popular Chinese social media platform. His reading habits greatly influenced his writing style.
