ABSTRACT

Tokensim is a concept often talked about when it comes to negative experiences of participation, but it hasn’t fully been explored in the context of mental health services. This chapter discusses existing models of tokensim but proposes that tokenism is founded in the feeling by participants that their involvement has been tokenistic, rather than set criterion. It also discusses the risks of tokensim, as well as how we can do participation better to avoid it, and the challenges faced when trying to achieve this.
