ABSTRACT
Political economy was considered part of civic education in the first century of Republican life. Every higher education student in the country had to follow a compulsory political economy course. This chapter traces the textbooks and professors of the course to understand its influences and consequences for the education of country elites and, thereby, on the political and economic debate during the 19th century.
