ABSTRACT

As the signature pedagogy for architectural education, the design studio and its critique practices must respond to contemporary conditions and challenges, through a transformation that reflects a radically inclusive approach to learning. Drawing on Williams et al.’s Inclusive Excellence framework, we formulated the “6-S Framework for Inclusive Contexts” in 2020. In this new study, we apply our framework to reflect on recent experiences of academics participating in final design portfolio crits. We share our observations and the voices of academics, and formulate provocations for each of our six inclusive contexts, namely: “Systemic”; “Structural”; “Support”; “Social justice”; “Symbolic”; and “Spatial”. Finally, we propose a new, extended framework, which can be applied by academics who wish to facilitate inclusive design studio crits. Our findings are positioned as a collegial conversation rather than a traditional research manuscript, and we invite readers to experiment with implementing our ideas, and to keep the conversation going.
