ABSTRACT

This chapter poses the following question: can one be disabled and healthy? This question is motivated by the divergence between disabled people’s reports about their own qualities of life and health and perception of the quality of life and health of disabled people by non-disabled lay persons and medical professionals. The answer to this question, Aas shows, depends on what model of health and disability one relies on. He argues that these two categories are not in principle opposed, and he interrogates the difficulties inherent in explaining why this is the case.
