ABSTRACT
This chapter gives a historical account of how the medical model of disability came to be. Though it may be assumed that disability was always thought of as the proper object of medicine, Rembis shows how disability came to be the object of modern medicine as modern medicine came to have a monopoly over medical knowledge. The chapter gives an account of how disability went from being a relatively banal part of life to a highly medicalized and stigmatized phenomenon.
