ABSTRACT

This chapter is reprinted excerpts from Brilliant Imperfection (2017) by Eli Clare, published by Duke University Press. These selections from Brilliant Imperfection give a powerful account of Clare’s experiences with non-disabled strangers, medical professionals, and other disabled people. These selections focus on the harm being labeled as defective and the drive to eradicate that is central to the concept of “cure.” The selections also include a rich discussion of the value and role of bodily difference, highlighting the harm of monocultures.
