ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic brought along with its dangers, panic and anxiety into the homes of people who otherwise are of a somewhat carefree character. The initial response of the public was that of fear of the unknown novel virus that exaggerated the growing problems caused due to the lockdown. In the midst of such struggles came about rays of hope in the form of leaders, ready helpers and individuals coming together as a community to stand and fight these problems. By procuring essential commodities, stitching and distributing face masks and lending support to the frontline workers, the people of Meghalaya gave meaning to the term ‘community’. Working together was not only a show of support but was necessary to push through the toughest of times that was shared with the rest of the world. For a community that thrives on social relationships and physical social calls, the restrictions of the lockdown proved to be a challenge. Nevertheless, the essence of social relationships was not lost but continued to be a part of the community as lockdown and restrictions were relaxed. This chapter aims to present a picture of the community life and the struggles of maintaining social relationships through the COVID-19 pandemic with regards to Shillong, Meghalaya.
