ABSTRACT

Speaking to unusually complex experiences of power and marginalisation in fieldwork, this chapter attempts to take seriously experiences and observations falling outside of typical constructions of power and marginalisation in the theoretical mainstreams. The chapter will then go on to reflect on fieldwork learnings, the core takeaway being the need for feminist research design to innovate from classic social theory to feminist postmodernism. This seeks to free the study of power and marginalisation from the epistemic and methodological ‘done ways of doing’ dominating theory and practice in the feminist field, especially the transcending of borders between macro, meso, and micro epistemological planes. By calling in non-paradigmness, a deeper exploration and more comprehensive, humanistic understanding of how power and marginalisation function can be harnessed for the ethical and theoretical design of feminist projects, particularly concerning the study of violence.
