ABSTRACT

Loudon (1783–1843) was apprenticed as a landscape gardener in Scotland before he moved to London in 1803. While developing his ideas of gardens and estate management, he also experimented with conservatory construction. In 1822 he published his Encyclopaedia of Gardening and in 1833 the first edition of his famous Encyclopaedia of Cottage Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture was published. His later work, The Suburban Gardener, and Villa Companion, illustrated his own model house built in 1824.
