ABSTRACT

Eversfield and Horne, Auctioneers and Appraisers, occupied premises in Parliament Street, Westminster, close to the Houses of Parliament. They acted as auctioneers for government departments, as well as for the sale of demolished buildings that resulted from redeveloped areas of London. In this case the demolition referred to the clearing of the site for the building of the British Museum. This rather short catalogue listing of the architectural salvage or fixtures and fittings on offer from the house reflected a growing trade that developed as architects and builders purchased the items for reuse. Brokers and dealers in London and elsewhere took over the trade and bought and sold items.
