ABSTRACT

Now the great enemy of economical illumination is absorption, both of direct and reflected light. In the arrangement of internal home decoration, including electric lighting, there are two factors that enter into every scheme, namely, beauty and utility and it is, unfortunately, the case that until quite recently utility has been sacrificed to art. For general dispersed lighting, bowl or hemisphere of holophane glass, mounted on the ceiling with the lamp inside, gives a soft and pleasing light emanating from above the line of vision, which is suitable for halls, drawing-rooms, etc. Poor lighting or dazzling rays are bad for people who have to use their eyes much, and they produce headaches and eyestrain; while to those who have no occupation, they are a source of annoyance and discomfort. In conclusion, effective illumination is a greater factor of good health and contentment of mind than many people appreciate.
