ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the extent and nature of such changes in depth by focusing attention on a part of Trabzon province. The survey concentrated on the socio-economic position and occupation of the former guest workers before their departure from Turkey, during their work abroad and since their final return, providing data on eighty seven variables which could be examined for statistical inter-relationships. However, 31 per cent shifted from one economic sector to another, the shift from the industrial to the service sector being the most common. The influence of post-migration occupation is also quite complex. In the simplest case, there is a marked emphasis on land by those employed in agriculture after their return, shown by the expected high share of investments in the purchase of land, which either serves the purpose of providing migrants with their own agricultural holdings or shows an unambiguous speculative character.
