ABSTRACT

Although, historically, many disciplines have been involved in the study of alcohol and alcohol problems, there has been relatively little truly interdisciplinary research. Alcohol studies have now reached a stage where research is needed that integrates thinking from the biological and the behavioral sciences. This thesis is examined in terms of perspectives about alcohol dependency, the influence of heredity and environment, aging and alcohol, and alcohol factors related to time and sex. The need to train scientists who will be prepared and comfortable participating in research that requires interdisciplinary collaboration is noted.
