ABSTRACT

Even if the media was unaware of the difficult role it would be called upon to perform in the unfolding coronavirus pandemic, the government certainly was not. On March 24, 2020 before announcing the national lockdown, Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited 20 owners and editors of media houses for a virtual consultation on the pandemic. It was reported that the prime minister personally took notes on the suggestions made in the meeting which lasted for an hour and half. Unlike the failure of most of the legacy print media, however, digital media and its associated social media platforms came into their own during the COVID-19-induced migration crisis. It produced complex news reports – old-style academic articles full of scholarship on migrant workers and human interest spot reports by bright young reporters with amazing response time. This also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
