ABSTRACT

In the past few months, we have borne witness to disturbing stories and images of people, struggling to find their way back home. Uttar Pradesh is the recipient of the largest number of migrants coming into the state via Shramik trains. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Adityanath has directed the setting up of a Migration Commission for the employment of labourers returning to the state. The state government was led to believe that labour laws were the only obstacle to investment in Uttar Pradesh. Labour laws were suspended, without taking the time to understand the protections they afford and the other, much more acute, barriers to investment the state faces today. Yogi Adityanath has attempted to cultivate the image of a “bold leader”.
