ABSTRACT

Digital media has provided a platform for the masses to amplify their voices, and in turn, to enable everyday citizens to work together to carry forth the message of a movement. Drawing on a range of philosophical and methodological approaches in communication (communication science and rhetoric), this chapter offers practical understandings of online strategies used to promote advocacy and outreach for social change. The chapter presents research and case studies that outline how digital activists engage in resistance across participatory social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter. Offering research-driven insight complemented with examples from activist practice, the chapter offers a guide for effective advocacy in digital spaces.
