ABSTRACT

Ani Pachen, known as the “Warrior Nun” for her religious dedication and fight against the Chinese occupation of Tibet, was the sister of the 14th Dalai Lama and a member of the Tibetan nobility. Pachen was imprisoned by the Chinese for over 20 years and subjected to severe torture methods as well as starvation, but never gave up hope, citing her Buddhist religion as the key to her survival. In 2000, her autobiography, Sorrow Mountain: The Remarkable Story of a Tibetan Warrior Nun, was published and spread greater awareness of her life and the Free Tibet Movement. Her efforts also included participating in the March for Tibet Independence, which is a grassroots campaign that to this day advocates for the independence of Tibet from China. The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the issue of Tibetan independence and to pressure governments around the world to support the Tibetan cause.
