ABSTRACT

The introduction to this critical academic study frames the seminal debates, themes and issues of this edited volume. It delineates the rationale underpinning this comprehensive study: that although the book's focus is contemporary, it is rooted in the historical, political and cultural forces that have shaped the global football and sporting phenomenon that is FC Barcelona. It seeks to draw the reader, the fan, the student and the academic into an understanding of the insights and analysis provided by the rich diversity of experts and authors on the club who have contributed to this thought-provoking global study. The introduction summarises each chapter and assesses the main theoretical perspectives of the volume, whilst commenting on some of the many writers who have been fascinated by the enigmatic charisma of Barça. As the club approaches its 125th anniversary, can its rich folkloric tradition and identity as a custodian of Catalan values and aspirations be maintained? At a time of crisis and uncertainty, can it still claim to be ‘more than a club’? The book itself addresses these questions from a variety of academic perspectives: the introduction sets up the debates at the core of the study.
