ABSTRACT

Futbol Club Barcelona is one of the most important clubs in Europe in terms of economic power and competitive potential. The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate that FC Barcelona's interest in participating in the European Super League project, together with other teams with similar potential in Europe, has now reached a point of no return in relation to two determining factors: economic inequality and the competitive imbalance, both evident in the five main European leagues and in the Champions League. The chapter carries out a historical and quantitative analysis of the last 25 seasons in the five main European leagues and establishes how the point of no return for a club like FC Barcelona is made natural by the growing economic instability of the current football model (accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic). It also shows that the European stage produces greater economic benefits and the audience that international competitions can attract to counteract the competitive imbalance evident in the results found in this research.
