ABSTRACT

Since its beginnings, FC Barcelona has been linked to Catalan identity, which has contributed decisively to the role of communication media in promoting the club. The objective of this chapter is to consider the mediated cultural folklore, myths and legends that have accompanied the development of FC Barcelona as a global sports phenomenon. To do so, it analyses the origins of the club and a series of narratives and metanarratives that have been important to the construction of its identity and the development of Barça as a global brand. The methodology applied is based on a descriptive study that consulted academic references and a discursive-oriented analysis of articles from the newspapers El Mundo Deportivo, La Vanguardia and ABC, as well as audiovisual materials from Barça Studios, NO-DO and TVE. The chapter reveals how, beyond the world of sports, the origin and evolution of FC Barcelona have been committed to Catalan nationalism.
