ABSTRACT

With the recent surge in home learning, the need for automation and personalisation within Learning Oriented Assessment (LOA) of languages has never been felt more keenly. Using projects from the Cambridge Institute of Automated Language Teaching and Assessment (ALTA) as case studies, this chapter argues that interdisciplinary collaboration is essential for developing the technology required to address this need. We discuss the nature of interaction between experts in language learning, assessment, linguistics, natural language processing, machine learning, and speech engineering who come together in ALTA to develop technology that benefits learners and test takers of the future.
