ABSTRACT

The High Commissioner, who is the UN official with principal responsibility for UN human rights activities, is appointed by the UN Secretary-General, with the approval of the General Assembly, for a four-year term in office, renewable for one term. A substantial structure of field presences has been developed to promote human rights, provide technical assistance, as well as to support UN conflict prevention, peacemaking, peacekeeping and peacebuilding activities. Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights mandate incorporates the promotion and protection of human rights throughout the world; the reinforcement of international co-operation in the field of human rights; the promotion of universal ratification and implementation of international standards; the establishment of a dialogue with governments to ensure respect for human rights; and co-ordination of efforts by other UN programmes and organs to promote respect for human rights.
