ABSTRACT

UNODC was established in November 1997 (as the Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention—ODCCP) to strengthen the UN’s integrated approach to issues relating to drug control, crime prevention and international terrorism; the Office was renamed in October 2002. UNODC services meetings of the UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), the main policymaking organ within the UN system on issues relating to international drug abuse control. UNODC focuses on strengthening the rule of law to underpin the implementation of UNTOC (in particular in conflict and post-conflict countries), breaking cycles of organized crime, and combating urban and armed crime, against a background of globalization where, increasingly, international approaches to combating organized crime are required. UNODC’s Terrorism Prevention Branch researches trends in terrorist activity and connections between terrorism and other crime, and provides legal and technical assistance to countries to improve their capabilities to investigate and prevent acts of terrorism.
