ABSTRACT

Created in 1967 as the Trust Fund for Population Activities, UNFPA was established as a Fund of the UN General Assembly in 1972 and was made a subsidiary organ of the General Assembly in 1979. UNFPA works to promote reproductive rights, and universal access to sexual and reproductive health care, with a particular focus on women and youth. UNFPA serves as the lead agency in following up the objectives of the Programme of Action, which envisaged universal access to reproductive health care services and family planning services, a reduction in infant, child and maternal mortality, a reduction in the rate of HIV infection, improving life expectancy at birth, and universal access to primary education for all children. UNFPA maintains an online World Population Dashboard, comprising data covering fertility rates, gender parity in school enrolment, sexual and reproductive health, maternal and newborn health, family planning, life expectancy, and harmful practices.
