ABSTRACT

Disaster and emergency response volunteers are a diverse population who come together to form the backbone of the workforce in responding to emergencies around the world. Without them, much of the disaster relief and recovery efforts coordinated by disaster management and emergency services would not be possible. These volunteers respond to a full range of high-impact events such as fire, floods, earthquakes, pandemics, acts of terrorism, motor vehicle crashes, search and rescue missions, and medical emergencies. They assist people in their darkest hours, often in extremely difficult working conditions, and sometimes with limited training or support. Such incidents may have deleterious personal impacts on their lives, but if supported attentively, they are well-placed to experience the enriching personal experiences that helping others in need can bring. They have a strong sense of community and come to their volunteering roles in search of connectedness and belonging, in addition to enhancing mastery of their skills to help others. This chapter explores the unique experience of disaster and emergency response volunteers and highlights the importance of understanding how best to assist them in their volunteer pursuits.
