ABSTRACT

Traditional livelihoods are part of the tangible and intangible heritage of the country. Climate change induced disasters impact the communities' resources and their capacities. Traditional livelihoods include the indigenous knowledge and practices which have been passed down since ages. This chapter strives to establish traditional livelihoods as sustainable alternative and as a means for climate action and disaster risk management. People play an important role for livelihood sustainability as well as for environmental sustainability. While the local communities face the brunt of climate change while having contributed the least to it, their ways and means become a source for climate adaptation. The chapter ends with some recommendations which can be explored to further strengthen the support for sustainable traditional livelihoods and make them lucrative for the younger generations to ensure cultural continuity as well as develop economic resilience.
