ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the role and place of communist information markers in the information space of Ukraine. A comparison of Ukraine’s post-communist transformation with other post-communist countries has been made. The chapter illuminates the areas in which communist markers have shown the greatest stability. The author proposes a classification of communist place names inherited from the past and assesses the legal mechanisms of eliminating the communist past from the information space. The chapter also discusses problems, lessons, and consequences of decommunization, where the threat of recommunization is viewed as an essential issue.
