ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a context for Nonprofit Academic Centers Council (NACC’s) transdisciplinary approach to advancing nonprofit and philanthropic studies. A framework for transdisciplinary approaches to field building is revealed that illuminates characteristics of approaches that transcend ways higher education has been historically organized by disciplines. NACC is examined to reveal the role academic centers play in building the field through transdisciplinarity. Finally, implications of transdisciplinarity for those guiding field building efforts in universities and practitioner communities are considered with specific focus on those leading nonprofit academic centers and programs.
