ABSTRACT

This exploratory chapter will discuss current and anticipated challenges to our programs, identify points of opportunity for expanding and strengthening nonprofit and philanthropic studies in higher education, and describe sample tasks and strategies to promote third sector studies. The chapter uses the metaphor of a social movement to serve as a guiding model for implementation of changes and growth initiatives in our field. Practical suggestions for action are vital at all levels of this movement. Universities, individual faculty members, program directors, alumni, and even current students can all assist by considering the wider scope of academic field-building and employing strategies that help both themselves and the field at large.
