ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the uses of visual journaling as an arts-based research strategy and method of scholarly inquiry. Through visual journaling, the author engages in iterative and generative processes of reflexive data generation and analysis related to her research aims. Visual journaling as data comprises not only the pages as products, but also the process as an active research endeavor that is intimately interwoven with academic, artistic, and self-identities. Together, the purposes, processes, and pages facilitate research inquiry as well as advancing self-study methodologies. Visual journaling is a multimodal research process that has implications for scholars seeking to develop more holistic, equitable, and therapeutic qualitative methods.
