ABSTRACT

The development of art history as an academic discipline taught in a classroom remains dependent on the technologies that reproduce images. Traditionally, this has been limited to two-dimensional images which fail to capture the essence of a three-dimensional work or space. As image technology advances, so too must the methods art historians use for teaching and conducting research. This chapter explores new approaches for teaching Renaissance art history that harnesses the full potential of immersive technology. Rather than relying on 2D images to recreate the experience of an architectural space, virtual reality technology allows students to experience these sites with their instructors.
